State Street and Downtown

Santa Barbara is internationally recognized for its natural beauty, unique character, and cultural vitality — qualities that come from the authenticity of its residents and draw visitors from around the world.  No place captures this renowned spirit more than State Street and historic El Pueblo Viejo.  As our community comes together to re-imagine State Street it is critical we have the right leadership in place to seize the incredible opportunity before us.  This is why Eric was appointed to the Paso Nuevo Ad Hoc Committee that is working to shape the future of this critical downtown asset and was part of the leadership team that comprised the Public Private Partnership between the City and the Santa Barbara Public Library Foundation that transformed Michael Towbes Library Plaza into an award winning public open space in the heart of downtown.

As Mayor, Eric Friedman will build on his work with the community to ensure that State Street retains its historic character while embracing its role as a robust center of civic, economic and cultural vitality. Efforts like the State Street Master Plan, redevelopment of Paseo Nuevo, and improvements to public spaces must reflect community input and lessons from other cities — balancing innovation with the everyday rhythms of local life. For example, Eric is a proponent of the Adaptive Reuse Ordinance because he understands what is possible when the city listens to the public and streamlines processes to create more housing and opportunity for local small businesses.

As our next Mayor, Eric will continue advancing solutions that create housing opportunities in our downtown core, reduce red tape for small businesses, and activate public spaces with events and programming that enhance Santa Barbara's cultural vibrancy. By fostering collaboration and removing barriers to investment, State Street will thrive for decades to come.

Preserving the city's character while building an economic foundation that works for everyone is not just possible — it is Eric's commitment to Santa Barbara.
